Job Description:

Description: The Supv Lab - Microbiology is responsible for the planning, coordination, evaluation, and supervision of all technical and/or operational activities and staff members in the microbiology lab. The Supv Lab - Microbiology is responsible for assuring the proper performance of all routine procedures in the assigned and must be able to identify, isolate, and study microorganisms and their by-products. The Supv Lab - Microbiology must also be familiar with a variety of the field’s concepts, practices, and procedures.

Typical Duties:

  1. Serves as the microbiology technical expert and information resource for the John Peter Smith Health Network. Ensures all activities within the scope of service continuously meet or exceed established regulatory standards.

  2. Performs high complexity microbiology tests by following department procedures as needed.

  3. Performs Laboratory and Hospital Information Systems (LIS and HIS) computer functions necessary to complete pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic processes, and other tasks as needed.

  4. Establishes policies, procedures, and protocols for testing performed and defines analytic accuracy, precision, sensitivity, and reference ranges for test methods. Provides oversight for the quality control testing and instrument maintenance. Organizes and files maintenance and quality control logs.

  5. Mentors and supports direct reports in their responsibilities and functions, ensuring they receive training and skills development.

  6. Reports any problems and/or abnormal findings to the Laboratory Operations Manager, Executive Director and/or Laboratory Medical Director to ensure timely resolution and/or follow through.

  7. Performs staff management functions (e.g. assess qualifications, orient, train, supervise, assess skills and competency). Participates in performance reviews and assists with the hiring selections.

  8. Drafts, reviews, and edits microbiology Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) with input and guidance from subordinates, Laboratory Operations Manager, Quality Director, pathologist, Medical Director and Laboratory Executive Director

  9. Ensures technical, mechanical, and quality control problems are resolved as they occur and ensures corrective action plans are documented and staff are informed.

  10. Ensures necessary instrumentation, testing materials, supplies, and other requisite resources are acquired, stored, and maintained appropriately.

  11. Participates in and ensures employee participation in proficiency surveys, quality assurance activities, and mandatory training continuing education programs.

  12. Ensures that technical staff are responsive to client requests and/or concerns.

  13. Attends laboratory management meetings and informs his/her staff of pertinent information

  14. Complies with all Federal, State, and Local Regulatory requirements related to health care delivery.

  15. Performs other job related duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications:


    Required Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a Chemical, Physical, Biological, Clinical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology field from an accredited college or university.
  • 4 plus years of clinical laboratory experience.

  • Required Licensure/Certification:
    MUST have evidentiary registration in one of the following:
  • Medical Technologist (MT); OR.
  • Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS); OR.
  • Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) ; OR .
  • Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) with the American Medical Technologists (AMT).

  • Preferred Education and Experience:
  • Master’s Degree in a Science related field from an accredited college or university.
  • 1 plus years work experience in a supervisory or leadership capacity.

  • Preferred Licensure/Certification:
  • Specialist in Microbiology (SM) with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP)

  • Preferred Specialized Training:
  • Training in advanced laboratory analyzer operation and maintenance.
